1. Data we collect
Your email address, username, profile information, your answers and a record of the questions you ask. Apart from the avatar you choose for anonymous questions, none of your information is shared with the profile owner. Your IP address is recorded when you ask a question or write a message. When you sign in, your IP address is kept in your session record and used to limit sign-in attempts.
2. How we use data
To run the service, send notifications and prevent abuse. We do not sell your data and we do not use it for advertising.
3. Automated content moderation
Your questions, answers, follow-ups and the images you upload are checked automatically before they are published. To do this, the text or image is sent to TypeSafe, a content moderation service based in the United States; for an answer or a follow-up, the last few messages of the conversation go with it as context. TypeSafe processes this content only to reach a decision; Whispi does not store the scores behind it. Content found to break our rules is not published. Messages containing a phone number or an email address are refused without being sent to any service. Messages whose writer says they are under 18 are not blocked, but may be flagged for a safety review. Blocked messages and messages flagged by the moderation are kept as reports for our moderation team to review and are not deleted automatically; a report holds the message text, the messages sent with it as context and the writer's IP address.
4. Retention period
When you delete your account, your data is permanently deleted immediately. Answers you set to auto-delete are removed when their time runs out. For questions and messages, the author's IP address is deleted 30 days after it is written or when the content is deleted, whichever comes first. The IP address of the person reported is kept for as long as the report exists. Contact, sponsorship and bug report forms do not store IP addresses.
5. Your rights
Under Settings › Danger zone you can download your data, and delete your answers or your account.
6. Ads
Some of Whispi's public pages show ads. Ads are chosen by the page they appear on, not by who you are: we do no targeting and use no advertising cookies. We measure ads with aggregate counters only (how often an ad was served, seen on screen and clicked); no user id, guest id or IP address is stored with these counters. To limit abuse, your IP address is used only as a short-lived rate-limit key and is not recorded. When you click an ad, you pass through a Whispi redirect address on the way to the advertiser's site. We send the advertiser nothing about you; what happens on their site is covered by their own privacy policy.
